Methylation is a chemical reaction that occurs in every cell and tissue in your body. DNA methylation is a biochemical modification of the building blocks of DNA and is one of the markers that indicate whether the DNA is open and biologically active in a given region of the human body. Methylation is the process of adding methyl groups to a molecule. A methyl group is a chemical shape made of one carbon and three hydrogen atoms. In the path of life, aging processes, environmental influences and way of life elements such as smoking or weight loss plan induce biochemical enhancements to the DNA. Methylation of proteins helps the body detoxify. For example, the methylation technique helps convert the toxic amino acid (homocysteine) into a beneficial amino acid (methionine). So, prenatal tobacco smoke exposure in early pregnancy may have important and lasting effects on DNA methylation and consequently influence gene expression and disease phenotypes across the life course. Methylation changes are related with a number of diseases such as imprinting disorders, cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, neurological disorders, and cancer.
